Who is Sparta Hospitality? In the business of providing information tools to the decision makers at affordable pricing.  Empowering others with information.  After thirty plus years, the repeated insistence of colleagues to “do something” with the tools I had built for myself; Sparta Hospitality was born.  I chose the name Sparta because of its  meanings to me: strong, basic and “get the job done”. Where I had a need, I developed the tool.  I designed with simplicity in mind.  In some situations I worked with enterprise caliper tools that ran on mainframes or servers.  In the small businesses where I was the accountant, I did not have those resources.  I had a budget. The other goal that is met with Sparta Hospitality is that I have set my “inner geek” free. In many positions, I was hired to "fix" something wrong.  It was rare that the person I was replacing was there to make for a transition.  I had to jump in blind with both feet running. As a tool I found Filemaker Pro databases more efficient than Excel spreadsheets.  There is nothing wrong with Excel, it is a great tool.  My journal entry templates are Excel worksheets.  I would not do differently.  But working with data across months and years, a database tool is better. Some have questioned why the use of Filemaker Pro over Access, since I do prefer Excel spreadsheets.  And surprisingly, my reason is exchanging data.  Filemaker Pro can read and write *.xls and *.xlsx formats, reliably.  Access cannot do that.   Filemaker Pro is great for reading *.csv, *.dbf, *.wk1, *.txt, and other formats.  There is a lot of power turning these flat file formats into a database.
